Cribra orbitalia are amongst the most frequent pathological lesions seen in ancient human skeletal collections. Chronic iron-deficiency anemia has been
proposed as the probable cause, but recent studies implicate other types of anemias as well as inflammation, osteoporosis, and pseudopathology.
